Christianity, one of the world’s largest religions, has a rich history that traces its roots back to the 1st century, in a small and marginal province of the Roman Empire. How Christianity became a global religion, starting from the faith of a few followers of a crucified preacher, is one of the strangest stories in history. Historians point to several turning points. Here are four of them.
1. Paul and the roads of the Empire
The apostle Paul travelled across the eastern Mediterranean, founding communities and writing letters to them. He made a decisive choice: the new faith would be open to non-Jews. He could rely on Roman roads, relative safety on the seas, and a shared language, Greek, which allowed the message to circulate from city to city.
2. How Christianity became a global religion by caring for people
Early Christian communities were known for caring for the poor, widows, orphans and the sick, including during the epidemics that struck the Empire. Historians such as Rodney Stark have argued that this practical solidarity was one of the most powerful reasons for their growth. People were drawn not only by ideas, but by the way believers lived.
3. Constantine and the alliance with power
In 313, the Edict of Milan granted religious tolerance to Christians after periods of persecution. Emperor Constantine favoured the Church, and in 380 Emperor Theodosius made Nicene Christianity the official religion of the Empire. From a persecuted minority, Christianity became a pillar of the state, gaining enormous influence and resources, and also the temptations that come with power.
4. Monasteries, missions and empires
After the fall of Rome in the West, monasteries preserved knowledge and missionaries carried the faith across Europe. Centuries later, European colonial expansion took Christianity to the Americas, Africa and Asia. This expansion often went hand in hand with conquest and violence, a painful chapter that many churches themselves now acknowledge, and one that still shapes how we take sides in global conflicts.
What the story of how Christianity became a global religion teaches us
Whatever one believes, the history of Christianity offers a lesson about how ideas change the world. The most lasting growth came from small communities that took care of the most vulnerable, and from people who chose to live differently from the society around them. But also, and that what drastically changed everything, by politics decision that made from one day to another change the religion of the whole empire.
Today, facing climate change, inequality and loneliness, we need the same ingredients: networks of people who help one another, who consume less and share more, and who show through their daily lives that another way of living is possible.
